Equipment and Safety

The Upper Cuyahoga River immerses you in a peaceful, quiet, natural Ohio environment. This is far and away from urban sprawl. This backcountry Ohio is unspoiled from development. The upper river is a marsh, wetland stream. This has slow currents and lots of lily pads. Closer to ending your trip, the current picks up the pace. The faster riffle current is exciting as you paddle through the Hiram Rapids community. The seven-mile trip ends with a slower current and homes along the shore.

The lower stretch of river South of Camp Hi is shallower, (2-3 feet deep) and wooded.

You paddle under bridges and past homes nestled along the shore. The wooded shores are full of birds, and occasional otters and muskrats.  This stretch is easy for all skill levels.  Youth groups have just enough challenges to build their canoeing skills.
